Galactic Enigma Remastered

Continuing our space theme for the weekend, our latest remaster is an expert in the manipulation of all things spatial. The Galactic Enigma sorcerer is a mage specially attuned to portal magic, and to the strange forces that define distance and space, letting it move matter, itself, and its magic nearly anywhere, opening up a variety of new strategies for everyone’s favorite innate caster. Our newest revision has been tuned for simplicity and ease of use, streamlining the features of the old version in a way that lets you focus instead on finding weird ways to use metamagic and less popular spells to exploit new angles of casting. It’s a subclass that rewards creativity, and some good old fashioned 4D chessmaster planning.

Sorcerous Origin: Galactic Enigma

Some scholars argue that the fabrics of space are fundamentally broken by the arcane, while others insist that the laws of nature lay the very foundation for magic to exist in the first place. One thing is certain, however: those who master these fabrics are unparalleled in their ability to create and control portals and rifts, the links between the stages of reality.

You are a creature of galactic influence. Your lineage might be traced back to anything from a planar traveler to a creature tied to astrological movements. Whatever the source, your magic stems from the heavenly bodies that subtly influence the material realm. You gain a connection to space that allows you to magically control the position of matter and to bend and shift the barriers between planes.

Galactic Magic

1st-level Galactic Enigma feature

You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Galactic Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn't count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be a conjuration or transmutation spell from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list.

Galactic Spells

Sorcerer Level Spells

1st feather fall, shield

3rd flaming sphere, misty step

5th blink, slow

7th dimension door, secret chest

9th telekinesis, wall of force

Twist of Space

1st-level Galactic Enigma feature

Your connection to the weave of space leaves you with a complicated relationship to the idea of ‘where’. When you cast a spell, as part of the same action, you can create a spatial knot in a space you can see within 30 feet of you, which lasts for 1 minute or until you create another. A spatial knot doesn’t occupy its space, appearing as a strange visual distortion in midair. When you cast a spell while within 30 feet of a spatial knot, you can cast that spell as though you were in the knot’s space.

In addition, you can use your spatial knots to sidestep danger. When you would take damage while a spatial knot is within 30 feet of you, as a reaction you can teleport to the spatial knot’s space. After you teleport in this way, the spatial knot disappears. You can teleport in this way a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Arcane Wormhole

6th-level Galactic Enigma feature

You learn to extend your spatial connection to the spellcasting of others. When you see another creature cast a spell with a range other than self, as a reaction you can displace the spell. The spell instead originates from or becomes centered on one of your spatial knots within 30 feet. You can choose a new target or targets for the displaced spell, but the original caster still rolls any attack or damage rolls as normal.

If the caster is unwilling, you can spend 2 sorcery points to force them to make a saving throw against your spell save DC with their spellcasting ability. On a failure, you displace the spell and choose new targets as normal. On a success, they retain control of their spell.

Master of Doors

14th-level Galactic Enigma feature

Your disconnection from space becomes more pronounced. You can maintain a number of spatial knots up to your proficiency bonus at one time. If you create another while at your maximum, a spatial knot of your choice disappears as the new one is created.

In addition, you can teleport with your spatial knots more easily. You regain all expended uses of Twist of Space when you finish a short or long rest.

Stars Align

18th-level Galactic Enigma feature

Your control of space is subtle enough that you can use it to slip past the defenses of others. When a spell originates from one of your spatial knots, you can choose one of the following effects:

  • One of that spell’s attack rolls gains advantage.

  • Any one creature affected by the spell has disadvantage on the next saving throw made to resist the spell’s effects.
