Mirror Mimic

As any devious DM probably already knows, once your players fall for a mimic’s trick, they will be paranoid about it forever afterward. It’s wonderful to be able to leave such an impact on your players, but there is a problem afterward; what next? They’re on guard now, and mimic aren’t that smart. What is a diabolically-minded DM to do?

Mirror Mimic

Mirror mimics are a special breed of mimic that are quite intelligent. This devious breed of mimic is capable of assuming not only the shape of objects, but also the appearance of anyone unfortunate enough to fall prey to its initial trap. It then devours its prey by draining its life force and stealing its memories. Once a mirror mimic has begun to drain a creature’s essence, it is nearly impossible to distinguish the two as they wrestle and fight against one another with equal desperation.

Lingering Imitation. Once separated, the mimic will use whatever knowledge it has gleaned to confuse its allies. After fully consuming a creature, the mimic may then assume that creature’s identity for a time, until instinct and hunger compel it to hunt again, using its new appearance in whatever way best serves that primal goal.

Grappler. The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.

Adhesive (Object and Mirror Form Only). The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 15). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.

False Appearance (Object Form Only). If the mimic is motionless at the start of combat, it has advantage on its initiative roll. Moreover, if a creature hasn’t observed the mimic move or act, that creature must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern that the mimic is animate.

Mirror Mind (Mirror Form Only). While the mimic is adhered to a mirrored creature, it can read its surface thoughts, allowing it to perfectly imitate the mirrored creature. While they remain adhered, it is impossible to distinguish the mimic and the mirrored creature by non-magical means. Any other creature that tries to target the mimic or the mirrored creature with an attack, spell, or other effect without distinguishing them first has a 50% chance to target the other creature.

Actions

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the mimic is in object or mirror form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.

Drain. The mimic drains the lifeforce of one creature the mimic is adhered to. The target takes 10 (4d4) necrotic damage. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and the mimic regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target is reduced to an amorphous mass of flesh if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0, and the mimic learns any information that the target knew, allowing the mimic to perfectly imitate the target’s demeanor.

Shapechanger. The mimic transforms into an object, into a creature it has mirrored before, or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Reactions

Mirror Creature. When the mimic adheres to a Small or Medium creature, it copies its appearance, including its size and approximations of the items it is wearing and carrying. When it does, it also learns any information that the mirrored creature would share with a casual friend.
