Spells for Neglected Damage Types

The world is filled with a variety of wonderous creatures and it is the task of many an intrepid adventurer to devise new and interesting ways to kill them. Within this document you will find a selection of new spells which will further aid in this esteemed tradition of violence using a variety of damage types we thought you might like to see more of.

Acid Spill

4th-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 60 feet

Components: V, S, M (A vial of acid and a stick of butter)

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Classes: Artificer, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

You spill slick corrosive acid within range in a 20-foot square across the floor. When the acid appears, each creature standing in its area must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 5d4 acid damage and fall prone. A creature that enters the area or ends its turn there must also succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 5d4 acid damage and fall prone.

At Higher Levels. If you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d4 for each slot level above 4th.

Embalm

2nd-level necromancy

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 30 feet

Components: V, S, M (a small fossil)

Duration: Instantaneous

Classes: Cleric, Warlock, Wizard

You reach towards a creature or corpse within range and slowly close your fist, conjuring toxic gasses to enshroud the target. If the target is a creature, it must succeed a Constitution saving throw, or take 3d8 poison damage and be poisoned until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and is not poisoned.

If the target is a corpse, or if the poison damage reduces a creature to 0 hit points, its body becomes stiff and its face becomes frozen in an agonized, contorted expression. The target’s body will not decay for a year and a day after this spell is cast on it.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 2nd.

Icicle Volley

2nd-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Self

Components: V, S

Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

Classes: Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

You flash freeze the moisture in the surrounding air into six sharpened icicles. They float in the air and orbit you for the spell’s duration. When you cast this spell—and as a bonus action on each of your turns thereafter—you can expend up to two of the icicles, sending them sailing towards a target you choose within 120 feet of you. Make a ranged spell attack for each icicle that you expend in this way. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 cold damage.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the number of icicles increases by two for each slot level above 2nd.
